Hi Dave, Thanx for your reply. What is it in the process of manufacturing the capacitor that can go wrong until it can caused the chips to be chipped-off or cracks. I've encountered alot of this problem lately. First I thought it was our process t

I'll respond directly to your question about capacitor fabrication in a later posting, but more importantly and possibly more directly in response to the situation many hands touch your capacitors before you do. Each of these stockroom personnel, UP

Most of the component vendors I've dealt with will guarantee the solderability of the terminations for three years if the components are still packaged in a full reel. If the reel is part used we've kept them for 1 year and then used a wetting balanc

Semi conductor devices last for 5-10 years or more when in use. Since those parts are in stock and are not in use they are considered in good condition. The only concern that you got is how will you process them. We had the same problem before and it

You might be able to create a process that involves testing a sample before each run. But then you would need something showing that a given batch would be consistent enough to justify testing a pcb to prove the batch. Or if they accept SPC then you

Does anyone have a listing of recommended usage requirements on SMT components. Can you use SMT resistors which are over 3 years old for example ? Can you use ICs which are not known to be moisture sensitive but which are over 5 years old.

A lot of it depends upon what the lead terminations are and the storage conditions. For example if they are tin you will run into trouble. We have used all types of parts that are all ages (We just started doing BGAs that are 5 years old.) I don't

HASL, shelf life, IPC standards

Good day, Are there any IPC standards applying requirements to HASL PCB shelf life? Are there any exact figures such as one year for instance? Could you point me to standard numbers if they exist. Iny input would be appreciated. Regards, Pavel

I don't believe there should be any issues with the HASL finish. The issue is how long on the shelf and is a bake out required to remove moisture from PCB, as in any FR4 PCB's that may have had time to absorb moisture.
